Employers look beyond qualifications

Graduate employers could be flooded with eligible candidates in three to four years time following the recent publication of A-Level results that reveal a record number of students achieving top grades.

However, leading recruiters say they will not raise their graduate entry level requirements despite the possibility of more recruits to assess.

Sarah Shillingford, graduate recruitment partner at Deloitte - which takes on around 1,000 graduates in the UK every year - said the company decided against doing this as it could disadvantage some students, depending on the school that they have attended.

She explained that Deloitte looked for three B grades at A-level plus a 2:1 degree as the minimum criteria.

While this inevitably gives a greater number of applications to assess, the company felt able to judge people on a range of skills and achievements that go beyond their school grades, she added.

Higher entry requirements could also backfire on employers and Keith Dugdale, global head of resourcing and recruitment at KPMG, is reported as saying he expects a talent shortage when the recession ends.
