Police in Hong Kong are to introduce psychometric tests in an effort to find the best new recruits.
From April, applicants for the posts of Probationary Inspectors and Recruit Police Constables will sit the psychometric test before they attend a final interview.
Media reports suggest the Force has spent several years looking overseas for experience in the use of psychometric tests. Last year a team of six staff set up a Personality and Cognitive Evaluation Programme (PerCEP) Centre to run the new psychometric test.
A spokesman for the Hong Kong Police Force said the psychometric test will help identify and recruit psychologically resilient and effective applicants whose personal values are aligned with Force values.
The test takes about three hours to complete and will strengthen an already stringent recruitment selection by providing additional information on the applicants cognitive abilities, emotional resilience and personality traits.
The Final Interview Board will continue to assess a candidates competencies such as leadership, communication skills, judgment, motivation and general knowledge as displayed throughout the selection process in deciding their suitability for the job, the spokesman added.
It is estimated that about 3,000 candidates a year will sit for the psychometric test at the PerCEP Test Centre in Police Headquarters.
