Psychometric risk assessments, driver licence checking and tyre pressure monitoring are steps being taken by one fleet manager to improve safety out on the road.
A fleet manager from St Albans, who previously suffered a broken neck in a road accident, is reported as saying such steps can help van drivers and fleet managers reduce the risks they face.
Leigh Stiff, whose firm has been selected as a Business Champion under RoadSafe's Driving for Better Business campaign, explained van drivers at his firm are also made to complete an inspection form on a weekly basis to make sure their vehicles are roadworthy.
Mr Stiff explained that drivers get stressed and make mistakes and it was important to minimise such an eventuality through effective management systems.
RoadSafe's Driving for Better Business scheme aims to reduce the number of road deaths and injuries by promoting best-practice across the motor industry and is part of the Department for Transport's Driving for Work road safety strategy.
In recent years, a number of road-safety campaigners have called for psychometric tests to be used as part of the driving test. Meanwhile a number of large organisations and fleet operators already use psychometric testing in the recruitment process.
