A new report suggests that the number of permanent staff vacancies fell to a new low during January meaning that the competition for available jobs is tougher than ever.
Published by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and professional services firm KPMG, the report is based on an index where 50 means no change. In January it fell to 24.7, down from 29.2 in December - the fastest fall since the survey was first published in 1997
The report also found that the number of people placed in permanent jobs had decreased for the 10th consecutive month. Temporary placements were also down.
The nursing, medical and care sector remained the only sectors to avoid the reduction in vacancies.
With more people chasing fewer jobs, candidates are advised to give themselves the best possible chance when it comes to the recruitment process.
In recent years more employers than ever before, especially larger companies, are using personality testing to ensure they recruit the right person.
While it is not possible to revise for a psychometric test, learning a little bit about them can help a candidate within the overall recruitment process.
Applying for a new job can be stressful at the best of times, let alone when competition for unfilled vacancies is so fierce.
Being faced with a test they are unfamiliar with can have a negative impact on any candidate's confidence so, as always, its best to be prepared by at least knowing the basics of psychometric testing.
