With recent news of record A-Level passes, a declining number of university places and increasing unemployment competition in the jobs market looks set to be fiercer than ever for school leavers.
In August more than 140,000 anxious A-level students found themselves chasing just 10,000 unfilled places at the UK's universities.
More than half the 22,000 places available through clearing had been filled by the Monday after the announcement of the A-Level results.
This meant places were being filled at more than twice the rate of last year.
There is a shortage of university places this year due to a surge in applications and a cap on places.
In fact many universities had no spare places at all and were forced to turn away very good candidates. Some are reported to have rejected students with a string of A grades.
With such competition for places, more than 100,000 young people will be left to re-consider their options and, with jobs in short supply, employers will be taking their time to find the most suitable candidates.
Not only will many of them be closely reviewing applicant CV's and interview techniques but also psychometric tests to find the ideal person..
As a result, school leavers would be well advised to find out about the basics of psychometric testing. It may just give them the edge over thousands of other hunting down that dream job.
