Tough year ahead for jobseekers
The year ahead looks like it will be a tough one for jobseekers with latest figures revealing unemployment in the UK increased by 35,000 in the three months to October to 2.5 million.
The Office for National Statistics figures marked the first time that the jobless measure has risen for six months and the surprise increase was driven by public sector job losses, and pushed the unemployment rate up to 7.9%.
The government is relying on private sector job creation to offset an estimated 330,000 public sector redundancies over the next four years, but experts believe this view out of touch with what is happening on the ground.
For UK businesses and their employees, 2011 is shaping up to be harsher than any of the past three years, according to David Birne an insolvency practitioner at accountants HW Fisher said Mr Birne.
Speaking to the BBC he said that this time next year unemployment is expected to be considerably higher than it is at present, as many more of Britain's companies go to the wall.
The contracting jobs market will mean that job hunters will need every advantage when it comes to finding work. They are advised to familiarise themselves with psychometric testing - a technique which is used by more and more employers to select the right candidate.
Although it is impossible to revise for a psychometric test, trying them out beforehand will give candidates an idea of what to expect in an increasing competitive jobs market.
